Work-based vocational training (also called "sandwich training" or "alternate training") is organised in the form of periods in a school or training centre as well as periods in the workplace in a company.

The development of European work-based training, in which alternation takes place between a training centre and a company or institution in another country, constitutes one of the main objectives of European policy concerning vocational training.

The Tutor-Ring project, funded within the framework of the Leonardo da Vinci programme, aims to raise the quality of such European transnational work-based training.
